"it's everything i hate living in new york and all. taxicabs and Madison avenue buses, with the driver yelling at you to get out at the rear door, and being introduced to phony guys that call the lunts angels, and going up and down the elevator when all you want to do is go outside" Holden finally realizes how phony everyone really is. and even though he has noticed it before he finally is sick of it all. and Holden is sick of everyone conforming and being a phony because everyone else is. the whole book Holden tries not to conform and he realizes why people are and notices almost everyone is phony in some way.

Is he out of line for thinking this? It reminds me of the quote at the beginning of the book: "Life is a game you play according to the rules." Are people 'phonies' if they conform to the rules of the game? Or are they smart?
ReplyDeleteif they conform to the rules then yes they are being smart about it. but does this not make them a phony? if they only due what they want people to hear, how do we know what is happening to our lives is what we like, or what we want?
